Anand Prabhu Kuti Vihar – In line with the normal Buddhist monasteries, this Vihar also has fourteen chambers built around the main courtyard. Each chamber is 8x9 square feet in size. There is a pillared corridor to connect the room and the courtyard. A six and a half feet high statue of Lord Buddha is installed in the sanctum sanctorum. On the right side, Padmapani Atlokiteshwar is seated as a servant. According to the records obtained from excavation Anandaprabhu Kuti Vihar was built by a Buddhist monk named Anandaprabhu during the reign of Mahashiv Gupta Balarjuna.
Swastik Vihar- Due to the presence of Swastik symbol in the ground plan, this Buddhist Vihar is known by the name of Swastik Vihar. There is an open courtyard in the middle and three rooms all around in a row. In the sanctum sanctorum, an eight and a half feet high statue of Lord Buddha with aura in Bhumisparsh posture is installed, and the statue of Padmapani is installed on his right side. Both the above mentioned viharas are protected by Chhattisgarh government.
Newly excavated Buddhist monastery Tivardev – Dr.
between 1999-2003. Excavation was conducted under the direction of Arun
Kumar Sharma, as a result of which three new Buddhist monasteries came
to light. From the discovery of these monasteries, it seems that this
area was highly influenced by Buddhism. Ideal models of Buddhist art and
architecture are visible in these monasteries. The entrance of the
largest of these viharas and its branches But the exquisite
ornamentation is the best among the Buddhist monasteries found so far in
India. On one side of the door branches, the story of crocodile-monkey
of Panchatantra is depicted and on the other side, the scene of fight of
rams is depicted. The owner of these rams is encouraging them to fight.
In another scene, the scene of the snake hunting a frog is also very
attractive. Mithun and couple idols are the center of attraction and
also the chronological depiction of the elephant sex scene is seen in
Buddhist art for the first time in Sirpur only. Apart from this, on the
gate branch of the entrance of another Vihar, the snake entering from
one corner and coming out again from the other corner in itself creates
a very interesting and real impression. Similarly, the drainage system
of the monasteries displays the technical skills of that time.
From the steps that came to light during the excavation, it is estimated
that the above mentioned Buddhist monasteries were two storeyed. About
50 meters east of these monasteries, remains of another Buddhist
monastery have been found, which the excavator has described as a
nunnery.
